Formed in London in 2004 by Orlando Weeks, Hugo White, Sam Doyle, Felix White and Rupert Jarvis, The Maccabees are an indie rock band who came to attention in 2007 with their debut album, Colour It In. A single, “X-Ray” had been released previously, in 2005, but disappeared without trace. Their second single, “Latchmere” (2006) was picked up by Steve Lamacq and the video became a YouTube hit.
Colour It In was physically released in the Spring of 2007, although it had been available from iTunes six months before. A single, “First Love”, charted in the UK Top 40, followed by “About Your Dress”, before the band headed to the States to tour with Bloc Party, following that with their own tour, in the UK, in the Autumn of 2007. Their track, “Toothpaste Kisses”, was used by Samsung in a 2007 mobile phone campaign.
In early 2008, as the band worked on new material, they began trialling songs in small clubs and on radio, and spent much of the year on the UK festival circuit. In 2009, their second album, Wall Of Arms, was released, going into the UK charts at No.13, and the lead single, “Love You Better”, again made the UK Top 40. The second single, “Can You Give It”, didn't chart inside the Top 100, but the band continued to tour, and were big hits at that year's Reading & Leeds Festivals, as well as selling out most of their album tour. The band then collaborated with Roots Manuva on a reworking of the track “No Kind Words”, calling it “Empty Vessels”. Later, they headlined the NME Awards Tour 2010.
The band played Reading & Leeds again in 2010, debuting new songs, as they did all through 2011. A new album, Call of The Wild, was announced for 2012, and the lead single, “Pelican”, was released on January 1st 2012.
