Soul singer Michael Kiwanuka came to prominence after winning the BBC's Sound of 2012 Poll. He grew up in London and studied at Westminster's School of Media, Arts & Design, before releasing his first EP, Tell Me A Tale, in April 2011. After signing to Communion Records, Kiwanuka supported Adele on her 2011 UK tour, and also appeared at the Hard Rock Calling Festival, releasing his first single, “I'm Getting Ready”, in July, from an EP of the same name. After winning the BBC award, his next single, “Home Again” debuted in the UK chart at No.37 in January 2012. He has been compared to Otis Redding and Bill Withers, and he gained much attention for his soul cover of Led Zeppelin's “Whole Lotta Love” on Radio 1's Zane Lowe Show at the beginning of 2012. Despite his early musical influences being acts such as Nirvana and Radiohead, it was discovering Otis Redding in a free magazine CD, which put him on the soul road, and a show-stealing performance on Later....With Jools Holland at the end of 2012 cemented Kiwanuka's status as 'the' one to watch in the coming year.
Michael Kiwanuka will release an album, Home Again, in March 2012, and continue to tour the UK throughout the year.
