Canadian teen idol, Justin Bieber, was discovered by music executive, Scooter Braun, on YouTube in 2007, after his mother posted videos of him performing in his bedroom. Braun tracked Bieber down and persuaded his mother to let him fly Bieber to Atlanta to record some demo tapes. Braun's business partner was Usher, and Bieber soon signed to his and Braun's company, Raymond Braun Media Group (RBMG). Usher arranged Bieber to audition for legendary producer, L.A. Reid, who immediately signed the 13-year old to Island Records, and his first single, “One Time” (2009) was released before his debut album had even been recorded, and was a huge success in his native Canada. His E.P., My World, came out later the same year, and spawned the single “One Less Lonely Girl”.
Bieber was promoted heavily via the internet, TV shows, and various live performances and guest spots, including performing for President Obama, and presenting an award at the 2010 Grammys. Around the same time, Bieber released his debut full-length album, My World 2.0, the single “Baby”, featuring Ludacris, reaching the Top 10 in seven countries, and the album itself shooting to No.1 in the Billboard album charts.
More touring, TV appearances and massive internet exploitation, particularly on social networking sites, helped create the kind of hysteria not seen around a teen solo artist since the time of David Cassidy in the 1970s. He embarked on a world tour in 2010, suitably entitled the My World Tour, then went into the studio to record his second album, Under The Mistletoe, with contributions by both Taio Cruz and Dr Dre, but because of puberty issues, with Bieber's voice undergoing distinct tone changes, the album wasn't actually released until November 2011. In the meantime, a 3-D film, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, was released into cinemas in February 2011 and grossed over $30m in its opening weekend in the US.
Bieber is planning to release his third studio album, Believe, in 2012, with Drake and Kanye West both confirmed as contributors.
